Accessing Curriculum-based Activities with UTIPS
Limited Capacity seats available

Curriculum-based activities on a UTIPS website can enhance student learning in the classroom, the computer lab, and at home. Limited finances restrict availability of software but online activities posted on a UTIPS website make it possible to access activities that fit any stage of your curriculum. In the classroom our weekly computer lab assignments can be previewed (using a laptop and projector). If the computer lab is unavailable, we can adjust the assignment to be done as a whole class and students can still access the activity individually on a home computer. At Parent Teacher Conferences or in other parent-teacher communication parents can be referred to a UTIPS website for resources that offer extra help or challenge based on individual student needs.

Writing for the 21st Century

Teaching students to write well and revise is much more engaging when they can follow along digitally, highlighting or emphasising certain aspects of the writing process along the way.  I have been successful teaching "writing laboratory" classes all the formal aspects of good writing practice:   sentence revising, sentence imitating, parts of speech identification, sentence combining, and oodles of other educationally sound, research-based practices.

Come see what we've been doing with our budding writers at the junior high level!   Plus, meet some of our writers and see how they are using their learning to inform their narrative writing styles.  Be prepared!  You may want their autographs.

• easy test taking and reporting capabilities

The High Density Learning Environment
Limited Capacity seats available

How will wireless density impact your 1:1 initiative? In today's classroom, advancing student learning through the use of wireless technology is an essential element to the 21st century learner. As the number of wireless devices on your network continues to increase, performance, bandwidth and reliability are impacted. Fortunately with advances in wireless network design and next-generation architectures, Wi-Fi networks can be designed properly to ensure a successful student per laptop initiative. This presentation will explore ways to provide greater user densities and achieve the performance needed to scale as client numbers and traffic loads on your network inevitably increase.

The Power of Storytelling in Teaching and Learning
Limited Capacity seats available

Within the last 10 years, digital cameras, editing software, authoring tools and electronic media have encouraged teachers to utilize many more approaches and tools than ever before to help students construct their own knowledge and ideas to present and share them more effectively. One of these powerful approaches to multimedia production is digital storytelling. This presentation will provide an overview of digital storytelling and its implication for teaching and learning. Characteristics of this technology will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the presentation. Participants will learn how to use digital storytelling from introducing new material to helping students learn to conduct research, synthesize large amounts of content and gain expertise in the use of digital communications and authoring tools. Integrating digital storytelling allow students to build meaning and understanding through visual storytelling, script writing, storyboarding, narration, audio and still images. Participants will come away with the knowledge of applying digital storytelling in educational contexts. Along with identifying what components are necessary to create a great digital story for the classroom and learn the different digital storytelling options, platforms, peripheral hardware, and functionality (Audacity, Photostory 3, iMovie, Bubble Share, PhotoBucket, and Movie Maker). Participants will gain knowledge in copyright laws and Creative Commons Network. They will become skilled in strategies for planning a digital storytelling project: writing a script, planning a storyboard, voice, narrative, special effects and transitions, images and audio.

Free Online Decoding Strategies Training to Improve Literacy for Struggling Readers
Limited Capacity seats available

Research has proven that many learning disabled students, including dyslexic individuals, have trouble breaking words down into letter-sound segments. But research has also proven that they "can learn these relationships with intensive phonics training” (Shaywitz, 2003). Because of this research, we know that students with low reading abilities need to be explicitly taught decoding strategies that train them to hear sounds and join them to make words. We also know decoding strategies help students develop automatic recognition of sounds and their written representations

Launching a Successful Summer School/Credit Recovery Program

Credit recovery is a hot topic in schools. How do you offer it with limited resources to an increasingly diverse student population? Aventa Learning by K¹² can help.  Students who process concepts at a slower pace... students who need more ELL support... students who've just had a bad year. The reasons students fail a course are as varied as the students themselves.

To help your students master material in a course they didn't pass, research tells us it's not productive to repeat the exact same lessons and content. Rather, they need a different approach. Aventa Learning by K¹² offers a fresh, and proven, online credit recovery option for your school. Come see how to start, or re-energize your existing summer school/credit recovery program and learn how schools around the country are achieving impressive results.

And, Why Is This Not Cheating?
Limited Capacity seats available

Cheating is something that is not often talked about other than to mention, "Don't do it!” right before a test. It is occurring right under our noses, even in plain sight. As many as 95% of our students admit to cheating. Cell phones, IPods, and programmable calculators are the preferred tools of cheaters today. Students have become very apathetic about cheating, claiming that it doesn't matter, everyone is doing it, or no one cares. Often students don't even recognize some cheating behaviors. In this session I would like to raise awareness of cheating in our schools and offer ways to open communication and hopefully minimize cheating in the classroom.

Developing Interactive Multimedia to Enhance Elementary Students' Critical Thinking in Science
Limited Capacity seats available

BYOL-A key challenge in science education is to develop robust scientific thinking skills that can be transferred to learning experiences outside the classroom. Partnering with the Utah Museum of Natural History, we developed a multimedia learning module for 4th grade science education that helps student develop skills in scientific observation. The learning module builds upon cognitive principles of learning by providing contextual practice that supports students in:
1) connecting new information with prior knowledge,
2) developing multiple perspectives, and
3) applying critical thinking skills in ill-structured scientific environments.

The presenters will demonstrate the observation learning module and discuss how specific components of the module are designed to develop robust scientific thinking. The presenters also will highlight the value of educational technology in helping students develop the cognitive skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information as they learn in out-of-classroom situations.

In sum, this presentation analyzes the critical role of educational technology in student learning in science education. It explores the potential for cognitively-based multimedia to promote authentic learning. Thus, it is significant both at theoretical and practical levels. At a theoretical level, it contributes to our understanding of the cognitive functionality of multimedia and its impact on students' critical thinking skills in science education. At a practical level, the project yields a prototype multimedia instructional module that can serve as a model to inform the design and development of technology-enhanced science instruction for students.

Take Your Classroom Global
Limited Capacity seats available

BYOL-TakingITGlobal (TIG) operates the world's most popular online community of young leaders. TIG members inspire each other to make a difference, learn about issues that matter, and find out how to constructively channel their energy and ideas. With a growing membership of close to 300,000 individuals in over 200 countries, www.tigweb.org has reached 10 million youth since its launch in 2000. As TIG's vibrant global community has evolved, educators have sought to integrate its resources and focus on action-based learning into their teaching. This was made easier in 2006, with the launch of the TakingITGlobal for Educators (TIGed) program. TIGed comprises a community of educators interested in empowering their students to think and act as world citizens, a collection of resources that facilitate the inclusion of global perspectives in the classroom, and a virtual classroom that allows students to use technology to learn with and about peers the world over. Depending on the amount of time available for this session, it could range from a simple introduction to the platform to a hands-on workshop in which participants create and build their own online classroom communities.

Using the National Science Digital Library in Teacher Preparation: Research Findings and Practical Strategies
Limited Capacity seats available

BYOL-Increasingly, educators are attempting to integrate technology-based practices and resources into classroom instruction. Hanson and Carlson (2005) found that 100% of teachers could articulate benefits of using digital resources in the classroom, but teachers also noted that finding useful digital resources takes too much time and the resources themselves need significant modifications before they can be utilized.

Educational digital libraries seek to provide teachers and learners with access to high-quality, online educational materials by cataloging only resources that meet standards for instructional value and accuracy (NSDL, 2010). The search tools provided by the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) may support efficient identification of educational materials for the classroom because searches conducted using the NSDL return only instructionally-relevant resources that have met preexisting quality standards.

Thus, we hypothesized that searches conducted within NSDL would be more likely to provide high-quality, reusable curriculum materials compared to a commercial search engine. In a study with preservice teachers, we examined how search tools provided by the National Science Digital Library impacted the success with which participants identified relevant educational resources that they deemed appropriate for classroom use.

Findings demonstrated an advantage of NSDL Science Literacy Maps over keyword search tools. NSDL Science Literacy Maps may be effective because they provide teachers with an organized representation of domain learning goals that can help structure the search for educational materials in a domain. We will discuss these results and their implications for practical strategies to support the search for online, educational materials.

Strategies for Increasing Student Learning with Online Videos: Findings from a NetSafe Study
Limited Capacity seats available

BYOL-This presentation will highlight useful strategies for increasing students' deep, meaningful learning with online videos, as informed by our research with videos to teach internet safety to adolescent learners.

The increasing presence of Internet as a communication tool among adolescents has raised concerns in parents, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders about the safety of adolescents' online behaviors. Studies show that 84% of the adolescents have used some form of the Internet (e.g., instance messaging, texting, etc.) for their social communication.

Research also suggests that the Internet has become a vulnerable place where adolescents frequently are targeted by sexual predators in cyberspace.

As a result, non-profit organizations and educational institutions nation and worldwide (e.g., Latvian Internet Association's Internet Safety project, Utah Education Network's NetSafe project) are developing educational materials for youth about Internet safety. Education efforts surrounding internet safety are especially challenging because they must develop deep knowledge about online behaviors that students will transfer to new situations outside of the classroom. We studied the differences between individuals and dyads in learning the video content using shallow and deep questions and prompts.

Preliminary results demonstrate that meaningful learning about Internet safety can be promoted by drawing upon learning science research that employs high-level prompts and collaborative models to encourage deep thinking. We will discuss the implications of these findings for teaching with video content.

World Class Technical Support Management
Limited Capacity seats available

Tech Strand-Managing ‘world class' technical support in your school or district is critical. Managing it well is the difference between success and the ‘same-old, same-old.' Anything less than a ‘best practice' approach is just that, less. This session introduces advanced components of FITS 2.0. FITS 2.0 is the updated ‘Framework for ICT Technical Support' implementation of technical support ‘best practices' that was developed in the UK and is now used in Europe and Australia. The presentation includes an introduction to resources and tools that are freely available to help improve the quality of technical support management. The concepts are suited to administrators or managers that are looking to make a difference. The principles of FITS mirror those of ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library), the widely used standard for business and industry. Although FITS was designed for use in education, the home of ‘do more, with less.' Remember, one FITS sizes all!
