Curriculum-based activities on a UTIPS website can enhance student learning in the classroom, the computer lab, and at home. Limited finances restrict availability of software but online activities posted on a UTIPS website make it possible to access activities that fit any stage of your curriculum. In the classroom our weekly computer lab assignments can be previewed (using a laptop and projector). If the computer lab is unavailable, we can adjust the assignment to be done as a whole class and students can still access the activity individually on a home computer. At Parent Teacher Conferences or in other parent-teacher communication parents can be referred to a UTIPS website for resources that offer extra help or challenge based on individual student needs.

First, a brief introduction and overview of Dropbox will be made. Then, we will delve into a "how to” guide in combining Dropbox in conjunction with Microsoft SyncToy and Task Scheduler to maintain and backup your files, along with tips on helping to stay organized and keeping your data intact at the same time. As part of that, we will discuss strategies in using Dropbox as a collaboration tool with your colleagues.

Copyright has always been an interesting question. With the powerful technologies we currently have, how and when does it apply to teachers? What about "Fair Use?" What are the limits on what I can do with my website as a teacher? (This presentation is not intended to be a legal discussion.)

Publishing books in an ePub format allows the author to create electronic books that can be read on an iTouch, an iPad, on a computer, a Nook, and other electronic readers. These books can be interactive with a table of contents, embedded photos, audio, video, Internet links, and in book anchor links. The ePub format can now be uploaded and published at iTunes U. The latest version of Pages on a Mac allows for the exporting of ePub documents.

There are many times that you wish you had your data with you. Use Dropbox, and you will never be without those important files again! With this free program, you can have access to 2 Gigs of files from any computer in the world. This is a perfect way to share photos and files with others. Invite another person to be a co-author, and work together on a writing project. Have almost instant access to this "cloud drive" from your computer, your school computer, your phone, your iPod, your iPad, or another computer without cost or without anything to carry. This is the best way to carry your data, and it is TOTALLY FREE! Drop it in Dropbox, and there you have it--anywhere!

We will demo the BYU CLIPS ("Computerized Instruction and Practice Software") English Grammar/Usage, ESL and Spanish Grammar courseware and discuss approaches to implementing CLIPS in classes and schools to improve student language proficiency. Well not really 101 ways, but perhaps some things you’ve not thought of using UTIPS for.  The purpose of this session will be to let you get an idea of the possibilities of using UTIPS other than for End of Level Test Review.  All levels of experience with UTIPS welcome from “UTIPS, is that a new beef dish at Texas Roadhouse?” to “I can create a UTIPS test in five minutes or less, blindfolded, with one hand tied behind my back.”  Here are some of the things I do with UTIPS in my 5th grade classroom:

Today's digital world with all of its technologies are very exciting because they offer so many opportunities to students and teachers to access so much information especially for educational purposes. Unfortunately, this same digital world can potentially expose students and teachers to risks such as viruses, Internet fraud, and cyber-bullying among others. Participants will learn about the latest research on what kids are doing in schools today with respect to the Internet and these technologies (e.g., cell phones) as well as what they can do to significantly increase digital citizenship in education.

FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League (FLL) is an exciting and fun global robotics and innovation program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science, teamwork and technology in kids ages 9 to 14. FLL students have the opportunity to solve real-world challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. This will be a presentation expanding the "The Green Map" project. Within the last 10 years, digital cameras, editing software, authoring tools and electronic media have encouraged teachers to utilize many more approaches and tools than ever before to help students construct their own knowledge and ideas to present and share them more effectively. One of these powerful approaches to multimedia production is digital storytelling. This presentation will provide an overview of digital storytelling and its implication for teaching and learning. Characteristics of this technology will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the presentation. Participants will learn how to use digital storytelling from introducing new material to helping students learn to conduct research, synthesize large amounts of content and gain expertise in the use of digital communications and authoring tools. Integrating digital storytelling allow students to build meaning and understanding through visual storytelling, script writing, storyboarding, narration, audio and still images. Participants will come away with the knowledge of applying digital storytelling in educational contexts. Along with identifying what components are necessary to create a great digital story for the classroom and learn the different digital storytelling options, platforms, peripheral hardware, and functionality (Audacity, Photostory 3, iMovie, Bubble Share, PhotoBucket, and Movie Maker). Participants will gain knowledge in copyright laws and Creative Commons Network. They will become skilled in strategies for planning a digital storytelling project: writing a script, planning a storyboard, voice, narrative, special effects and transitions, images and audio.

Research has proven that many learning disabled students, including dyslexic individuals, have trouble breaking words down into letter-sound segments. But research has also proven that they "can learn these relationships with intensive phonics training” (Shaywitz, 2003). Because of this research, we know that students with low reading abilities need to be explicitly taught decoding strategies that train them to hear sounds and join them to make words. This session is for the Power Users.  You've been using your SMART Board and you know a lot about it.  Come prepared with questions, to share some of the ideas you have, as well as learn new advanced tricks and techniques. 

BYOL-Stop motion animation is a video made with a series of still photographs strung together. Participants in this session will create a short video with this technique, which involves creating a storyline, taking multiple still photographs, then importing them into a movie-making program. Participants should plan to attend both sessions, part 1 and part 2. Cheating is something that is not often talked about other than to mention, "Don't do it!” right before a test. It is occurring right under our noses, even in plain sight. As many as 95% of our students admit to cheating. Cell phones, IPods, and programmable calculators are the preferred tools of cheaters today. Students have become very apathetic about cheating, claiming that it doesn't matter, everyone is doing it, or no one cares. Often students don't even recognize some cheating behaviors. In this session I would like to raise awareness of cheating in our schools and offer ways to open communication and hopefully minimize cheating in the classroom.

BYOL-A key challenge in science education is to develop robust scientific thinking skills that can be transferred to learning experiences outside the classroom. Partnering with the Utah Museum of Natural History, we developed a multimedia learning module for 4th grade science education that helps student develop skills in scientific observation. The learning module builds upon cognitive principles of learning by providing contextual practice that supports students in:
1) connecting new information with prior knowledge,
2) developing multiple perspectives, and
3) applying critical thinking skills in ill-structured scientific environments.

The presenters will demonstrate the observation learning module and discuss how specific components of the module are designed to develop robust scientific thinking. The presenters also will highlight the value of educational technology in helping students develop the cognitive skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information as they learn in out-of-classroom situations.

In sum, this presentation analyzes the critical role of educational technology in student learning in science education. It explores the potential for cognitively-based multimedia to promote authentic learning. Thus, it is significant both at theoretical and practical levels. At a theoretical level, it contributes to our understanding of the cognitive functionality of multimedia and its impact on students' critical thinking skills in science education. At a practical level, the project yields a prototype multimedia instructional module that can serve as a model to inform the design and development of technology-enhanced science instruction for students.

Tech Strand-Our session will review how local SIS data can be used to organize and focus assessment data for teachers, parents and administrators. Using local and current data to group and retrieve CRT, benchmark and other assessment data provides formative information delivered in a familiar and current context. Teachers and counselors view their students assessment scores in their current class. Administrators can view longitudinal trends. Parents and students have full access to their scores and can compare them with grades and district averages.
