Tech Strand-As we embrace technology inside and outside of the classroom we face the reality of outgrowing our network infrastructure. We are no longer providing network connectivity just for computers and printers, now we have a large variety of services and devices requiring network access. Fire alarms, security systems, IP telephones, IP surveillance cameras, IP video projectors, audio-visual control systems, point of sale stations, wireless access points, HVAC, irrigation systems, video conferencing equipment, and access control systems are just a few examples of systems and devices that require available ports in a patch panel or switch and also require cables to connect them to the existing infrastructure. With such an increased demand for connectivity, it is not uncommon to find ourselves in data closets trying to figure out the source or destination of cables and we struggle attempting to identify the exact location of critical systems and services. In this session we will discuss best practices for administration of network resources, labeling and documentation of existing cabling plans in order to simplify troubleshooting and facilitate future growth.
