BYOL-A key challenge in science education is to develop robust scientific thinking skills that can be transferred to learning experiences outside the classroom. Partnering with the Utah Museum of Natural History, we developed a multimedia learning module for 4th grade science education that helps student develop skills in scientific observation. The learning module builds upon cognitive principles of learning by providing contextual practice that supports students in:
1) connecting new information with prior knowledge,
2) developing multiple perspectives, and
3) applying critical thinking skills in ill-structured scientific environments.
The presenters will demonstrate the observation learning module and discuss how specific components of the module are designed to develop robust scientific thinking. The presenters also will highlight the value of educational technology in helping students develop the cognitive skills necessary to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information as they learn in out-of-classroom situations.
In sum, this presentation analyzes the critical role of educational technology in student learning in science education. It explores the potential for cognitively-based multimedia to promote authentic learning. Thus, it is significant both at theoretical and practical levels. At a theoretical level, it contributes to our understanding of the cognitive functionality of multimedia and its impact on students' critical thinking skills in science education. At a practical level, the project yields a prototype multimedia instructional module that can serve as a model to inform the design and development of technology-enhanced science instruction for students.
